How do you calculate the cost of a road trip?

You can calculate the cost of a road trip with this formula: (distance in km ÷ 100) × fuel economy (L/100 km) × gas price ($/L). For a 250 km route, fuel economy of 8 L/100 km, and gas at $0.90/L, that's 250 ÷ 100 × 8 × 0.90 = $18 in gas alone. The calculator above runs this automatically — enter the distance yourself or pull it from the GPS map. Looking for someone to split costs with? Check the listings on the home page or ship a package along the way — you'll find the full rundown in the Guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 100 km road trip cost?

At an average of 8 L/100 km and gas priced at $0.90/L, 100 km runs you about $7.20 in gas alone (8 × $0.90). The real cost can run higher with tolls and parking — add those separately.

How much cheaper is carpooling?

Split the gas cost with one rider and you pay half. For a $18 route, that's $9 — and with two riders, about $6, or a third of the cost. CO₂ emissions per person drop the same way.

Does the calculator only cover gas, or wear and tear too?

The An7Way calculator covers gas cost and CO₂ emissions. It doesn't factor in depreciation, insurance, or maintenance — if you want the full running cost, tack on about 20–30% for vehicle wear.
